The work Variations is a compositional variation on a clay bust of the artist’s mother. It stems from a conception of the creative process as a continuous flow, from which she extracts and presents only a fragment. The sculpture was not conceived as a final artifact, but as material intended for further transformations and reflections. Through gradual deconstruction, it was transformed into a series of still-life variations. The disintegration of the material, the cracking of the clay, and moments of error became part of the work and opened up space for observing the transformation of form over time. The photographic part of the project presents another aspect of this process: hand-made analog contact prints of negatives and an enlargement mounted on glass. The installation here functions as a reference point for the work; a record of one of the phases in the process of creation and transformation. The original sculpture no longer exists; the work oscillates between the portrait and its disintegration and thematizes the image as an unstable, mutable form emerging through the process.
